Host nation Egypt opened the 2019 African Cup of Nations with a hard fought win over Zimbabwe at the Cairo International Stadium.
Egyptian winger Mahmoud Trezeguet scored the only goal of the game with a curled finish in the 41st minute.
Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah came close to adding a second for his side but was denied by a brilliant save from Zimbabwe keeper Edmore Sibanda to end the first half.
The second half did not produce any goals but both teams enjoyed moments of good chances from Zimbabwe midfieder Khama Billiat and Egypt’s Salah.
The opening fixture ended with Egypt getting 59% of possession and nine shots on target with Zimbabwe playing 41% with two shots on target.
Egypt and Zamalek defender Mahmoud Alaa won the man of the match.
The win puts Egypt top of Group A with DR Congo and Uganda facing each other on Saturday afternoon.
