There is confusion on social media as people are divided on the #IStandWithOtabil campaign started by sympathisers to support the founder and leader of International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Dr. Mensa Otabil.

Since the hashtag #IstandWithOtabil started trending as part of effort to support Dr. Otabil, many social media commentators have strongly criticized the move as childish and ignorant while some, particularly his followers have come out in strong defense of the campaign and thrown their support behind it.

According to those criticizing the move, the campaign was unnecessary and the issue should be left to the appropriate authorities to handle rather than people jumping to the defense of the preacher when they clearly have limited information and knowledge on the whole issue.

However, his followers are also of the view that, they do not need detail report from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) before they support Dr. Mensa Otabil as they can vouch for his integrity and his innocence on the issue.

These opposing views have resulted in a social media argument and banter between the two sides with the debate not looking like ending anytime soon.

Background

Capital Bank of which Dr. Mensa Otabil was Board Chairman was liquidated together with some four banks after what the BoG termed as mismanagement of the Banks’ funds by the top executives leading to the bankruptcy of the banks.

Many are blaming Dr. Mensa for the case of Capital Bank, citing the fact that he was the board chairman of the bank and as such should be blamed for the unfortunate collapse of the bank as he supervised the mismanagement of funds by board members and top executives.
