Over eighty (80) students of the Koforidua Technical University in the Eastern region of Ghana have been left with various degrees of injuries after becoming victims of Police brutality, Asembi.com can authoritatively report.

Dozens of armed Police officers stormed the Universal Hall, a private hostel, to ‘ransack’ the facility, brutalise and arrest the students for what the students claim to have no idea of.

Police broke into individual rooms

Narrating the ordeal to Asembi.com, the PRO of the Universal Hall, Anderson Enoch said on Friday morning around 4am, armed police officers numbered about 60 stormed their hostel while they were preparing for examination at 9am. According to Enoch, the Police team was led by the Eastern Regional police operations commander DSP Kartey Otumi who “heartlessly” came to arrest them like “hardened criminals”.

The PRO added that the police invaded their rooms “using electric shockers, fan belts, axes, catapults, guns and other sophisticated weapons” to arrest them.

“We were all brutally beaten up even without resisting arrest. Majority of us were in boxers, some bare chested, barefooted and we were all matched with plastic handcuffs from our hostel to the regional office which is about 45 minutes’ walk. At a point of the journey, we were asked to trot to the destination still with the handcuffs”, Enoch narrated.

The students were made to sign bonds of good conduct before they were released to the school authorities to be taken to hospital.

Asembi.com can confirm that over 80 students are currently in the Regional Hospital treating various degrees of injuries.

The wounded students who are left emotionally and psychologically traumatized are seeking to be compensated by the Ghana Police, have their bond reversed and are also requesting for the immediate removal or transfer of the Eastern Regional operations commander of the Ghana Police Service DSP Kartey Otumi.

The Police said the students were arrested because they attacked a Police vehicle, a claim that the students have denied. The Police however did not give details as to how the vehicle was attacked and how they concluded that students from the Universal Hall were the attackers.

Police brutality and unlawful arrests are on the rise in Ghana. Only few of such cases find their way in the media. Few months ago, a woman was beaten by a Police Officer when she visited the bank to make a withdrawal. A blogger was recently arrested unlawfully for writing fake news about an actor. Two men were also arrested unlawfully for attempting to cast a spell on the President and Asantihene. Suspected Sakawa boys who were not resisting arrest were severely brutalised.
