Pastor Mensa Otabil has been one of the most trending personalities in Ghana for the last couple of days after it emerged that he was board chairman of now collapsed Capital Bank.
Since the news emerged that he may have been involved in the mismanagement of funds belonging to the bank, particularly some GHc610million given to the bank by Bank of Ghana (BoG) for recapitalization, the public has been divided on where they stand with regards to supporting Dr. Mensa Otabil or not.
While some believe the executives of the Bank engaged in the misappropriation of the Bank’s funds on Dr. Otabil’s blindside due to his limited knowledge in finance, others also believe he cannot exonerate himself from the mess that led to collapse of the Bank, especially the mismanagement of the GHC610 million given to the bank by BoG. Some of which were given out as loans to companies owned by the board members and some shared among the top executives as allowances, with the rest being used to establish another bank, Sovereign Bank.
In the light of all this, Dr. Mensa has come under severe scrutiny from some top state men and civil society groups who believe he let the nation and those who looked up to him down, especially considering that he has been one of the most vocal voices against the country’s leaders and how they mismanage the resources of Ghana.
With the debate of his role in the collapse of the bank going on, a social media campaign with the hashtag #IStandWithOtabil was started by his followers some few days ago and as expected it received mixed reactions from social media users.
In a poll conducted by Asembi.com, greater number of people chose to sympathise with Woyome over Obatil. Mr. Woyome owes the state some GHC51million and Dr. Mensa Otabil also ‘supervised’ the mismanagement of GHC610million given to Capital Bank by the state. Surprisingly 61 percent of those who took part in the poll decided to support Mr. Alfred Woyomoe who has been public enemy number one for over half a decade now while a paltry 39 percent chose to support the founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC).
From this it is quite safe to say that Dr. Mensa Otabil in the light of the Capital Bank scandal has become the new public enemy number one.
