Few days a video surfaced on social media in which actress Lydia Forson was seen in a scuffle with a security officer. In the video you could hear the security officer warning Lydia Forson to stop filming him while she shouted on top of her voice “I know my right, I know my right” and even worse telling a security officer “what the fuck do you think you are going to do?” “Who the fuck do you think you are?”

As usual and as you would expect, some of our lovely and cherished ladies jumped on to their greatest ever topic, gender discrimination against women. Within hours, Lydia Forson had written an article talking about how the officer discriminated against her supposedly because she was a woman and all of a sudden, the security officer had been tagged women abusers, gender discriminators, and so many other names without even taking into consideration what actually led to the scuffle and things actress Lydia Forson said in the video. But are you surprised? That is the country we live in. People are so quick to judge and condemn, especially after listening to just one side of a story.

Lydia Forson later took to her Facebook page playing the role of the ever angelic and innocent one, laying the blame squarely on the officer, accusing him of abusing his powers, beating a woman and so forth, somehow forgetting the kind of verbal abuse and absolute disrespect she showed to the man in uniform.

What was even more sickening was her shouting on top of her voice that she knows her right and has every right to record the officer. The officer tried to seize her phone in an attempt to stop the filming. But wait, does she really know here right? And does she consider the right of others? Or perhaps she thinks it is only her right that matters in such situations? Per the 1992 constitution which governs every citizen of Ghana and that includes the police officers as well, no one, absolutely no one has the right to videotape people without their consent. It is considered as a breach of privacy. Secondly, is she aware that as a security protocol, you do not and cannot take videos at security zones? If she’s aware, didn’t she know where she was standing, a police barrier, is classified as a security zone? Same way you cannot walk to the flagstaff house and take videos, same way you cannot walk up to a police barrier and take videos without permission. The fact that people do it and go scot-free does not in any way make it legal. Someone must educate Lydia Forson on that.

And that was not as bad as it could get, she went on to use the F word on the security men as the struggle to take away her phone went on. Telling the officers “Who the fuck are you?” and in another instant using the word “Stupid”. The very same people she would call if she finds herself in danger. And this is the person some of our young sisters and brothers look up to and call a role model. Since when did it become okay to use such vulgar words like “fuck” and “stupid” in public and saddest of all on security officers.

Funny enough, Lydia Forson wasn’t alone, she was with a couple of friends when the incident took place at the barrier but why was she the one the officers got involved with, apparently she was the only all-knowing one who ‘knew her rights’ and could yell fuck, stupid and all that.

What people failed to realized was despite the verbal abuse, all knowing Lydia Forson rained on the officers, not one single insult or verbal abuse came out of the lips of the officers. And oh wait, I heard her say she was slapped. Well, the video seem to say otherwise because we couldn’t see any slap in the video, all we saw was an officer trying to take away her cellphone as she continued to ignorantly shout “I know my right, I have the right to record”

Too many times people have capitalized on the bad image of the police service to do the wrong thing, and put the blame on the police knowing very well the public is likely to support and sympathize with them but sorry, Lydia, this time we are not buying yours. The arrogance and ignorance you exhibited in the video deserved no sympathy. You could have simply put down your cell as ordered by the officers and have a talk with them but no, Lydia is the strong woman who doesn’t take orders, not even from law enforcement officers and she had to exhibit it, video it and post it on Facebook and later write an article telling the whole Ghanaian populace how to stand up for their right.

Celebrity, well maybe yes she is but definitely not a role model for our young ones to look up to. If you can easily without any remorse refer to an officer as “stupid”, use the f word on them over a recording, then you are not part of the long list of celebrity role models. You simply don’t qualify miss.
