Incest or the act of having intimate sexual relations with blood relations is spoken against by the Ghanaian culture, religion and even the Ghana Constitution. Unlike other foreign countries like the United States of America where we have famous stars like Celine Dione dating and having intimate relationships with their blood relations, the concept and its practice is very alien in the Ghana Entertainment Industry.

Blood relations refer to siblings, children, and parents. The law, however, does not forbid the marriage or sexual relations between cousins. The rest of the article discusses two Ghanaian celebrities who dated their cousins.

Though dating your cousin is very much allowed, it’s hardly practised in Ghana. People even consider their extended family members as blood relations and see it as a big “taboo” to marry within the family. But Ghanaian Actress, fashionista and Socialite Bibi Bright, is one of the few Ghanaian celebrities who broke the unspoken rule and code of not having an intimate relationship with close relations and family.

According to the actress, she had dated her cousin for four years without both of them knowing they were related. Although the identity of this cousin is yet to be made public, it is what it is, Bibi Bright dated her cousin and she has confirmed it.

The actress may have knowingly or unknowingly dated her cousin. Their love story started in 2014 when Justice Dankwa, a medical student in the United States proposed love to her. Justice then promised to marry the actress and even gave her a promise ring in the public. Justice and Gloria were cousins. The actress disclosed this in an interview with Delay on the Delay Show.

Sadly, Gloria lost Justice Dankwa to death at the 37 Military Hospital. The actress took to her Facebook to explain the situations surrounding his death. In her post, the actress referred to Justice Nana Dankwa as “Cousin”. She wrote,

Good Morning Family, I’m so grateful for your support yesterday. Thanks y’all for the messages and phone calls. I’m sorry I couldn’t attend to all the calls and messages. My cousin, a medical student in the US, was in Ghana on holiday, lodging at the Golden Tulip, yesterday morning complained of chest pains. He was rushed to the 37 military hospital, he, in the medical field suspected what could be wrong, so immediately he got to the hospital, he went straight to the nurses and said, “please I’m dying, I can’t breathe properly, I need oxygen please”. He was told there was no oxygen. He kept screaming, “meewu o! Meewu o! Mep3 oxygen!” There was no oxygen! According to the driver from Golden Tulip who sent him there, he sat down for 10 minutes without oxygen. So there was another patient who had an oxygen mask on, they took the oxygen from him and gave it to my cousin. He passed away after 4 minutes. The other patient also passed. I saw both of them in the cold room. It is hard for a prominent young man to die. He had a lot of ambitions. He was an organist, a musician, a pharmacist, a soldier in the US Army and a medical student. Nana Wusu, due wate! Kos3! Nyame nfa wo kra nsie! We’ll miss your smiles and laughter… I still remember your tiny eyes when you laugh… Nana Dankwa

That was a very sad account by Gloria Sarfo. May the good soul of Justice Nana Dankwah rest in peace!
