Over the years, Ghana has lost some of its celebrities to gory accidents. Names like Ebony Reigns, Suzzy Williams and Kwame Owusu Ansah all of blessed memories come to mind when we remember celebrities whom we have lost through the ever dreaded road accidents.
While these aforementioned celebrities were not so lucky to survive the various accidents they were involved in, some celebrities however survived the scare of death when they were involved in some serious accidents, living to tell their story of how car accidents almost robbed them of this beautiful life.
Samson Lardy Anyenini
Samson Lardy is undoubtedly one of the finest and celebrated journalist and lawyer in Ghana. He serves as the host of Joy FM’s flagship news analysis show, the newsfile. On 4th April, 2017 he got the scare of his life when he got involved in a dreaded road accident on the Accra-Tema motorway. According to reports and eyewitnesses accounts, a vehicle which was in the same lane as Samson Lardy’s car, skidded off the lane, summersaulted and tumbled on top of Samson’s car. How he managed to survive that left people wondering as his car was mangled in the process and beyond repairs. However, the driver of the vehicle which summersaulted and felt on his car was not so lucky as he lost his life instantly after the car landed in the nearby bush. It was later revealed by police investigation that the pick-up car summersaulted as a result of a bust tire, causing the driver to lose control and skidded off his lane, leading to the gory accident and the death of the driver. Samson was taken to hospital by on lookers, but survived with very little injury.
Nana Ama McBrown
In January 2013, Ghanaian actress and screen diva Nana Ama Mcbrown got involved in a horrific accident on the George Walker Bush Highway at Lapaz. The actress was returning from set around 2am with husband, Maxwell Mensah when they got involved in the accident. The accident proved quite scary and life threatening as Nana Ama McBrown had to be rushed to the surgical ward of the 37 Military Hospital while his partner, Maxwell Mensah sustained a broken arm injury. According to reports, the accident was as a result of a car crossing them on the highway without any signal, leading to the near-death accident of the actress and her husband.
In 2016, Ghanaian music icon and legend of the highlife genre, Abrantie Amakye Dede almost joined the long list of celebrities to have perished from road accidents when his parked car was ran into by a vehicle which had failed brakes. The incident which happened in Bonsu in the Eastern region of Ghana, took the life of Amakye Dede’s manager, Isaac Yeboah who was standing beside the car while Amakye Dede himself was in the car. Amakye Dede and his bodyguard survived with serious life threatening injuries.
Alhaji Mahmoud Bawumia
Vice president of Ghana, H.E Alhaji Mahmoud Bawumia is one of the few celebrated Ghanaians who have survived gory road accidents. Alhaji Bawumia who was then a vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) almost met his untimely death in 2013 after his convoy got involved in a near-fatal accident while returning from Bole in the northern region. The vehicle in which he was, reportedly had two tyres burst just a few minutes into the journey, causing the car to veer off the road and roll over several times. Surprisingly Dr. Bawumia and the three other persons who were in the car with him all survived the accident with no casualties reported.
Yaw Siki rose to fame in 2012 with his hit single wop3 dodo. But in 2013, the rising hiplife star almost lost his life to road accident on the infamous and accident prone Accra-Tema motorway. Report on how the accident happened is quite sketchy but the injury to Yaw Siki was life threatening and placed him at the doorstep of death as he went into coma for 24 hours after being rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the 37 Military Hospital. From the accounts of eyewitnesses, Yaw Siki’s 2004 Toyota Camry car summersaulted near the Kingsway International Christian Center (KICC), Dominion Center. Yaw Siki upon regaining consciousness and months of treatment decided to leave the hiplife scene and do God’s work after claiming he saw a certain light and heard a call during his coma period.
Dadie Opanka got his near-death encounter in August 2017 when his luxurious 4×4 car ran into a pole after losing control. The incident which happened on the N1 Highway in Accra did not claim the life of anybody but reports indicated that one person who was with the hiplife artiste sustained some degrees of injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Opanka came out with a Gospel tune which featured Gifty Osei. Many thought he was diverting into Christian music until he joined the profane trend with Bonde.
MUSIGA President survived a serious accident in the early stage of his career which led him to embark on several road safety campaigns.
These celebrities have all to be thankful for, considering the fact that their colleagues who happened to find themselves in the same situation ended up leaving this world to join the unknown world, never to be counted among the living again.
