Days ago, Daniel Duncan-Williams and last born of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams set the internet ablaze when photos of him holding a cigarette went viral. And just when people were about to forget about the actions of Daniel which had the tendency of dragging his father’s name into disrepute, the ‘prodigal son’ found ways of coming up with another masterstroke of controversy.
Daniel, who also calls himself the East Legon pornstar and Obroni Papi, posted videos of himself enjoying some quality time with different ladies. The videos included scenes where; he was naked together with two ladies, he was seen kissing a lady passionately, and one where he was seen professing his love to yet, another different lady. One can say that Daniel is really ‘living life’ to the fullest and making ‘good’ use of his youthfulness. Probably he is reading the Bible book of Ecclesiastes differently.

However, the actions of Daniel have brought his father’s ministry and leadership qualities under the radar. Some think that the Archbishop’s failure to discipline his son is indicative of an inability to lead followers to Christ, whereas others think that the competence of the Archbishop needs not to be assessed based on the output of just one son since the Archbishop has many children who are doing very well in the ministry of God.
Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams is himself, not a stranger to controversies. In 2006, he divorced his wife, Reverend Francisca Duncan-Williams when it appeared as though their marriage of twenty years was falling back in place after an earlier divorce in 2001. However, the justifications given by their children, Elsie, Francesca and Daniel Duncan Williams for the divorce are highly contradictory. Elsie and Francesca maintained that their mother was unfaithful to their father and was just interested in the money and respect that came with the name ‘Duncan Willams’. Francesca also insisted that her mother embarked on a hate-campaign, pitching the children against their father. The divorce chapter according to Daniel rather had different contents. According to Daniel, his father called their mother a witch and rather brainwashed his other siblings and himself to believe that their mother was unfit to be called mother. The Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams also said that he married at the age of 24 (when he was not matured) in order to primarily escape sin, hence the failure of his marriage to Rev. Francisca. ‘Tales of three stories, eh?’ Very interesting!
Well, in as much as ‘charity begins at home’, it doesn’t necessarily mean that one who lacks charity wasn’t taught at home. The truth is that as we develop, socialize and attempt to understand the world, we get exposed to different ideas and habits and when we become adults, we are the ones to be held responsible for our actions and inactions.

We engage in the base rate and post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacies when we conclude that the shortcoming of Daniel Duncan Williams is a dent on the ability of Archbishop Duncan Williams to lead people to Christ.
The base rate fallacy points out an error in reasoning where we fail to exhaust a lot of options before drawing conclusions on an issue. So with Daniel’s case, since we do not know a lot about how he was brought up and considering that his other siblings are not in the press for such deviant behaviours, it will be unfair to conclude that his father has failed hence is not fit to lead others to Christ.
Post hoc ergo propter hoc also points out an error in reasoning where we quickly rush into conclusions based on scanty evidence which are in the strictest sense, highly inconclusive. With Daniel’s case, one may say that since bad parenting leads to deviant behaviours and Daniel has shown a deviant behaviour, then his parents, especially his father (considering his status as one leading others to moral uprightness) is at fault and hence is not fit to lead people to Christ.

Is Daniel that ‘Mensah’ found in every house? If we are convinced to assume that he is, then what about the father’s decision to divorce the wife against the Bible’s grounds for divorce? Can his followers confidently follow him with the hope of reaching Jesus Christ to grab the promised eternal life?
